This is one of those amazing questions that we all hoped
would have an easy answer.
We are very used to going into the doctor's office for a test that will give us a positive or negative, thus arriving at a clear cut answer. But this is not how it works with tick/insect born diseases. There isn't a single test out there that is sensitive and reliable enough to give a truly definitive answer. Every day there are false positives and a much higher percentage of false negatives. Due to this, many sick people are running around undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
We used to think that we only had Lyme if we developed the classic bull's eye rash. Now, people can develop a different kind of rash entirely or no rash at all.
And please do not rely on being aware of whether or not you have been bitten. The percentage of people who have a tick/insect born disease and actually remember getting bit is low.
Tick/insect born diseases are most effectively diagnosed by a clinical evaluation of symptom pictures from a Lyme literate practitioner.
So what can we do on our own???? Due to the amazing work of Dr. Richard Horowitz, we have access to a basic questionnaire that will help you make the decision. Do you need to see a Lyme literate practitioner? This is a great place to start.
